I’ve been reading about this cool gadget on a lot of tech websites so I thought I would post about it since it makes a great gift for anybody who talks on the phone a lot. The gadget is called a magicJack and it allows you to make unlimited local and long distance phone calls for $20 a year!

All you do is plug it into your USB port and plug any corded or cordless handset in and you’ve got yourself a phone! The actual magicJack costs $40 which includes service and after that it’s just $20 a year. This is also a great gadget for travelling!

It’s been getting great reviews. Here is a good quote that sums up this gadget:

It’s way easier to use than Skype, way cheaper than Vonage, and way cool to boot.

  3. A friend sent me a MagicJack. In less than two minutes I was making all my phone calls for $40 for the first year and then $20 for the next! That’s right – not $20 a month but $20 a year! I’m saving big $$$$ – eat your heart out Vonage!
It is with great delight that I’m kicking AT&T and Vonage to the curb and wearing paid-for-with-the-savings pricey Monolo Blahnik shoes to do it.

  4. I’ve been using magicJack since March and it’s been a good bargain and decent alternative compared to the phone company.

Though I like the service, the pop-up window got a annoying. MagicJack is installed on the home computer, so whenever the phone rings, the pop-up window takes over the computer.

Being a programmer, I made a small utility that keeps the pop-up window hidden when I don’t want to see it, and also shows it when I do want to see it. MagicJack is still fully functionally, just not in my face anymore.

It’s freeware and available at CNET/Download.com if you want to give it a shot:
