How To Eat Sushi

Wow, I had no idea that I have horrible sushi etiquette. At least according to this article: Are You Sushi Savvy?

To sum up the article and all of the things I’ve been doing wrong for YEARS now:

1. don’t eat the ginger piled on top of the sushi. eat it between pieces of raw fish to cleanse the palate
2. eat nigiri (rice topped with raw fish) with your fingers…not chopsticks!
3. dip fish side down, not rice side down, into the soy sauce
4. eat nigiri fish side down so you taste the flavors in the correct order

I can’t wait to eat sushi CORRECTLY next time!

You were putting gari (ginger) on top of your Sushi!?!? I would have slapped you had I been there. That’s the equivalent of pouring red and white wine in the same glass!

And here’s some rules you didn’t mention. If you are eating at the bar, in front of the Sushi chef (itamae), you should technically never put wasabi in your soy sauce, but rather ask the chef to add more wasabi under the fish if you like it hot. However, doing this will almost certainly result in him attempting to incinerate your brain on the next round.

Also note that all these rules are A) for Edo-Mae style Sushi, and B) will be frequently broken by the Japanese themselves. The only time I would recommend strict adherence is if you are sitting directly in front of the Chef and you are eating at a fancy place, and ordering an “omakase” Chef-choice set. Then following them will make you look knowlegable and wise to the Japs.

Just read the article, apparently they did mention that point. Kudos for them.

One more thing! Be wary of the squid and shrimp Nigiri! Those are the ones that are always carrying a Wasabi bomb underneath the fish.

And if you specifically told the itamae that you like it hot and you bite into that squid…….

Prepare to ride the lightning, child.

i was going to mention that you are also not supposed to put the wasabi in the soy sauce, but hakushaku mentioned that already. i also found out ive been eating my ramen incorrectly too (supposed to eat all the noodles first THEN drink the soup… don’t put the soup and noodles in the spoon to eat in one bite). you would think that growing up in japan would have taught me a thing or two :P but i agree with RiSE… eat it the way you want! i tried to do it the “right” way but it was never as satisfying.
