If Filmmakers Directed The Superbowl

This video is too cool to not break my no posting on the weekend rule….It shows clips from famous filmmakers on what the Superbowl would look like if they directed it. Includes David Lynch, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, etc….

Happy Superbowl Day!

Meat Free Monday

I’m sick today so I don’t really feel like posting but I thought I would help spread this message about Meat Free Mondays after reading about it through Gwyneth Paltrow’s newletter GOOP. I just watched the documentary Food, Inc recently and now I feel a little guilty having such a meat heavy diet. How hard would it be to declare one day a week No Meat day? It will help the environment AND be more healthy! Both of my parents are vegetarian so I’ve had some very non-meat delicious meals so I know it’s possible. Here are some facts taken from GOOP on why we should eat meat less or not at all:

– The Livestock industry produces gases that are extremely dangerous for the future of our environment.

– The two main gases, methane and nitrous oxide, are considered to be more harmful than CO2 (methane is 21 times more powerful than CO2 and nitrous oxide is 310 times more powerful than CO2) so the data suggests that this is causing a highly dangerous situation for ourselves and, more importantly, for future generations.

– Methane also remains in the atmosphere for 9 to 15 years; nitrous oxide remains in the atmosphere for 114 years, on average, and is 296 times more potent than CO2 – the gases released today will continue to be active in degrading the climate decades from now.

– Livestock production is land intensive: a recent report by Greenpeace on land use in the largest meat producing state in Brazil found that livestock (cattle) production was responsible for vastly more deforestation than soya.

– A third of all cereal crops, and well over 90% of soya, goes into animal feed, not food for humans. Eating less meat will free up a lot of agricultural land which can revert to growing trees and other vegetation, which, in turn, will absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

– Livestock production is water intensive: it accounts for around 8% of global human water use. The estimated 634 gallons of fresh water required to produce one 5.2 ounce (150g) beef burger would be enough for a four-hour shower. For comparison, the same quantity of tofu requires 143 gallons of water to produce.

-Livestock production is the largest source of water pollutants, principally animal wastes, antibiotics, hormones, chemicals from tanneries, fertilizers and pesticides used for feed crops, and sediments from eroded pastures.

Superbowl Superdip Party

I’m supposed to go to a Superbowl Superdip party this Sunday (hello? is it happening guys??) so I’ve started looking up some possible dips to bring. Which one sounds the best?

Healthy spinach and artichoke dip – I’m a sucker for spinach and artichoke dip but a healthy one that’s supposed to be even better? I MUST TRY!

Hot artichoke and crab dip – I love recipes with all trader joe’s ingredients! they are usually very simple and tasty

avocado, tomato, and mango salsa – this is what came up when I searched for the highest rated dip on allrecipes

creamy pimento cheese – pimento cheese always makes me think of when I was growing up and ate pimento cheese sandwiches. YUM!

Hot Stove-Top Chorizo Cheese Dip Recipe – this just sounds so delicious!

spicy black bean hummus – i dunno why i never thought of replacing the chickpeas in hummus with black beans…my favorite!

Here is a picture of our last superdip party!

Where’s My Zicam?

Ugh…if I wake up tomorrow with a sore throat I am going to be so pissed. I haven’t been sick in FOREVER…I was on a streak! I almost forgot what a sore throat felt like. Anyways, I’m so tired and kind of stressed out because I have things on my plate that I don’t really want to do but that I *have* to do. erghhh. So instead of a post, you’ll get some videos:

Students at Olathe Northwest attempt to pull CollegeHumor’s legendary Half Million Dollar Shot prank on beloved teacher Mr. Branstrom, successfully luring him onto the school’s basketball court with the promise of NCAA Final Four tickets in exchange for a half-court shot. Everyone is in for a surprise…

The most awesome video of a sleepwalking dog ever. Watch til the end!

No Post But A Mini Update

Darnit…I was doing so good since the new year with my daily posting! Well…does this count as a post?

Last night we slept for the first time in our new house! Unfortunately, the internet I had hooked up a few days ago didn’t work (hence no real post today). GRRRRR! We called customer support and they think the modem may be defective (let’s hope the problem is that simple!) so now we have to wait til Wednesday for a technician to come out. Even when they came out the first time, the tech was complaining to me about how glitchy these new modems are….I wonder why they use modems like that. After being in the biz this long you’d think they’d have found one that WORKS! I hate dealing with Time Warner/Verizon and other internet/cable businesses. Aren’t they the worst????

Anyways, I can’t wait for the rest of our furniture to come in. It was surreal but exciting. I can’t wait for us to turn this little house into a HOME!

Things I Like But Probably Won’t Buy For The House

I’m sad that for whatever reasons I won’t be buying these items….most likely because they are out of my budget.

Woodstation weather display – is this not the coolest clock ever? a motion sensor detects when you are near and lights up….otherwise it looks like a modern wooden sculpture. I don’t know how the LEDs show through the wood like that but I am loving the weather indicators too. So cute!

Parson’s desk from West Elm – These beautiful desks come in all different colors and have been featured all over design blogs. I’m smitten and REALLY want two of these for our office but at $300/desk, I can’t justify getting it. Do you think a cheap ikea one will suffice?? hehe

iPad – I know…the iPad was a bit underwhelming but if I had some extra money to spare, I wouldn’t mind having one of these in my living room. You know if you were over at our house lounging around you’d use it too! It’s a giant iPhone…well…I love my iPhone!

Ketchup pillow – How funny is this pillow! She even has mustard, soy sauce, and various other food and geeky pillows. But totally doesn’t match the decor of our house.

Paper pot – who knew I would ever covet a tissue paper box but I doooooo

AHH…wish i was rich :(

Haiti Stories And Links

I know we are being bombarded with everything that’s happened in Haiti but it really has been devastating to see what this natural disaster has done to what was already such a fragile country. Anything we can do to help is worth it and it’s been amazing how much people have donated already! A few stories and pictures that touched my heart:

An op-ed piece written by some doctors working with Doctors Without Borders in Haiti

Even though it seems like everyone has lost someone, their home, their way of life, it is amazing how people are helping each other. A lot of children have been orphaned. There is one beautiful little boy, who is about four years old. I don’t know where he came from or how he got into our makeshift hospital compound, because he doesn’t really have any injuries. I asked him if he was alone, and he told me, “Yes, I am alone, but I’m here with my friends.” I look around and all of his friends are people he doesn’t know, all waiting for surgery.

The little Haitian boy who greeted rescuers with a beaming grin as they freed him from a huge pile of rubble said yesterday, “I smiled because I was free — I smiled because I was alive.”

7 yr old raises $240K for Haiti – it’s amazing no matter how old you are you CAN make a difference!

Haiti’s children on their own on shattered streets – it’s the hardest imagining these children who have lost their parents!

Google’s Haiti Earthquake page – great roundup of donation links and news

At the very least, text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts. This is SO easy to do and $10 is nothing to us but can mean SO much to them. It just takes 1 minute to do!!!
