What To Eat When You Have Food Poisoning

Nope, I don’t have it this time….but if you do here’s what to eat/drink and avoid:

Drink clear beverages such as fruit juices, broth, ginger ale or herbal teas.

Eat small amounts of food every few hours rather than 2-3 large meals per day.

Eat slowly and sip beverages slowly.

Suck on popsicles or frozen fruit juice.

Try the BRAT diet: bananas, white rice, applesauce, and white bread toast.

Eat bland, soft foods (e.g., pasta, mashed potatoes, jello).

Eat dry foods like unbuttered toast, saltine crackers, and dry cereal without milk.

Avoid greasy foods, fried foods, margarine, butter,
and oils.

Avoid spicy foods.

Avoid dairy products.

Avoid caffeine (in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, some pain medications).

Avoid alcoholic beverages.

Avoid acidic foods and juices (e.g., citrus fruits, tomatoes).

Eat foods high in soluble fiber.

Avoid foods high in insoluble fiber.

OK, question: Why do you suggest that people try drinking fruit juice and / or try the B.R.A.T. diet, and then suggest avoiding acidic foods such fruit… ?

only certain fruits are acidic like say oranges so you should avoid orange juice, etc….a good clear juice to drink would be apple juice…and bananas are not acidic. hope that helps!

I’m a nursing student currently suffering from food poisoning, and I’ve never heard of the BRAT diet. I will definitely have to try it. Nothing is worse than this – both ends all day. :(

Thank-you SO MUCH! While it isn’t 100% confirmed, I’m fairly certain I do have food poisoning and I had been wondering what was best to eat/drink as I’ve only been sick a couple hours yet!

You advocate eating a lot of wheat foods such as crackers and white bread. Contrary to popular belief these are Not easy on the stomach. Please Google prolamins & lectins. Also, why drink energy drinks?

Is it okay to take blackcurrant drink? Though i feel a lot better after taking it,since i still feel nauseous 2 days after having food poisoning.

I thank you also, but I’m wondering about foods to eat if/when one thinks one might have eaten something that might be bacteriologically unpleasant.
What foods might one take to neutralize the unwelcome bacteria before they have you regretting your existence at 2 in the AM?
I’m thinking salty foods might help. Maybe lots of soda pop; stuff that might accelerate the digestion process to move the questionable dish’s remains more rapidly to the various exits.
I’m not interested in what to eat after the eruptions/excretions. Generally, my tummy lets me know; orders up for toast and tea when things are screwy.
Religion comforts…and cripples.

Thanks! I’m gonna use these tips. I’ve had food poisoning for awhile now and it sucks. And it sucks having to miss school because of it.

The best way to blow up a bad restaurant, is to call the local TV stations and the public health department. The more interesting the tale you tell, the more the various entities will want to look into the situation.

I’ve heard yogurt is also good for food poisoning, is that true?

^^^ yea yogurt is good for u to take during food poisoning, make sure it’s with out flavor, it should taste something like sour cream, ( yea ) sounds yucky but because the yogurt taste abit sour that’s what will fight against the anti acid. I was told by my coworker. it’s Friday and I’ve been feeling crapy since Tuesday, I basically put it on my self. I’m so stupid I ate raw cookie dough …. Huh…. Only diarrhea and nausea, haven’t vomited yet, well I haven’t made myself atleast …. I hate feeling this way fml …
