For anyone who visited my website over the weekend, you might have discovered that girlrobot had a facelift! I cleaned up a lot of the ads and unnecessary clutter that was on my website. I hope you like it! I think I’ve retired the robot logo for now until I come up with something “cuter”. As for my banner, it was just a random image I found…is it too girly? When I am less lazy I will try making a more original banner.
As for the content, I hope to start writing more original and useful posts, maybe once a week. I’ve been so extremely busy, it’s been hard to find time to put in as much as I would like to on this blog. I’ve also started a personal blog since I missed writing more about things going on in my life. I have some big news which I will share on there as well. It will probably be a few days/weeks before I unveil that though. As for the past year, I can’t believe that I’ve been so consistent with updating. For anyone who’s followed me through my websites in the past, you know I lose interest quickly or can go weeks/months without updating!
Anyways, I hope you enjoy the new layout. Please tell me if you find anything wrong/broken or have suggestions you’d like to make. As always, my contact link is up top and I answer all of my emails. Also, if you’d like to do a link exchange either email me or automatically add me and when I catch it on my incoming links I will add you back. Thanks for everyone who’s visited, left a comment, linked me, or sent me email in the past year. I love getting to know fellow bloggers!! Here’s to another year of blogging :)
Here is one I didn’t know you could do. Checks are the most annoying thing I get in my mailbox considering I never use them and it’s such an easy way to get identity theft:
Call your credit card companies and ask them to stop sending you cash advance checks. Even if they come (conveniently) with your bill each month, cash advances usually start accruing interest immediately, so it’s not a good idea to use them. If you do receive them and don’t plan to use them, you should destroy them.
If you’re a gamer or know someone who is, then you/they are undoubtedly playing Halo 3 as I type. Halo 3 is the final version of the series that was released yesterday. I passed by a Gamestop and saw a line of people waiting to get their hands on the game hours before it was to be released at midnight even though they were guaranteed a copy because they preordered it. Not a minute wasted!
Anyways, if you’re looking for the perfect gift for your hardcore gamer friend….get them these super cool Halo USB drives made by Mimoco:
Call me a nerd but I love documentaries! Just saw Year of the Yao last night and I thought it was very informative and entertaining despite not being a huge basketball fan. I had no idea the struggles that Yao had to go through to get to where he is now. I have a newfound respect for him and other athletes from China. They are so dedicated, hardworking, and humble. Anyways, the movie is not really just a basketball movie…like in the extras, the producers called it more of a “cultural” film.
Anyways, I thought I might make a list of other documentaries that I’ve enjoyed:
Spellbound - One of my alltime favorite documentaries. It’s about the national spelling bee kids. It follows a handful of kids and how they prepare for the contest. It’s pretty crazy! The kids are so quirky. Love it.
Jesus Camp - inside look into evangelical christians and christian youth. really interesting!
Supersize Me - Most everyone’s seen this but worth a mention. It didnt’ stop me from eating McDs though! hehe
Grizzly Man - I think I liked this one a lot cuz I had just come back from Alaska and was in love with the outdoors
And despite all the controversy about how biased michael moore is, I enjoy his documentaries. They are pretty amusing! hehe
I find that putting in really young ages (under 10) is really astounding. For example:
At age 5:
Actress Shirley Temple received an honorary Oscar.
Mozart began composing minuets. Once when a second violinist failed to appear for a string quartet performance, Mozart took his place, even though he’d never seen the music.
Yo-Yo Ma started playing Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. His father told him always to play a movement of Bach before bedtime, to assuage fear, hunger and loneliness.
Pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski played the Bach Inventions from memory.
Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton learned Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.
Ukrainian composer Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev composed his first piano work.
Chilian pianist Claudio Arrau made his recital debut with pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann.
Few people who know me know that I was once on a jumproping team. haha…yes…in elementary school we had a jumproping team where we did demonstrations during the half times of basketball games. So yes, I have a soft spot for jump ropers! I just recently read this interesting article about Rene Bidaud who is a professional rope jumper. She also performs with Cirque de Soleil, one of my favorite shows! Anyways, if you look in the picture she is doing the trick with 1 hand under her leg jump. I USED TO DO THAT!!! I’m not so sure I could still do it but I could do some crazy tricks back in the day. haha.
Check out this cool video of one of her jumproping routines:
Yes, this was a total dorky topic but I just had to post about it! hehe
This is a great letter for buying a car through email, just substitute with your own specs and details:
Dear Honda Dealer,
I am ready to purchase a 2007 Odyssey EX minivan and would like a quote from your dealership.
I have done considerable research and know invoice price, holdback, dealer cost and the average purchase price. I’m contacting a number of dealers in Wisconsin and Illinois and expect very attractive offers, as well as a pleasant buying experience. While I know there are no incentives at this time, I.m ready to buy now from the dealer with the most competitive offer.
Please respond via email with your lowest total price for the van (excluding tax, title and license). No calls, please.
Thank you,
