Brain Dump Mondays: The Magic Castle

Last week I finally got to go to the Magic Castle. In case you don’t know what that is, it’s a private magic club that you can only get in if you are invited by a magician. Unfortunately, I do not know any magicians personally. Instead, we heard from a friend that a new website, Things To Do LA, was hosting an event there so we signed up through that. I’m not sure if they are going to do it again or not but check out the website if you are looking for things to do around LA.

Anyways, I thought the whole Magic Castle experience was pretty cool. When you first enter the building, you say the magic words “abracadabra” and a bookshelf opens letting you inside. Once inside, it’s like a huge maze. There’s a pretty nice restaurant inside (we didn’t get a chance to eat but maybe next time!) and then there’s a bunch of rooms where you can watch different magic acts. There are also a bazillion bars everywhere to help you get liquored up! When we first got there, we watched a show by Joe Stilton. OMG, this guy is so amazing. He also looks like Jim Carey! He was the best magician I’ve ever seen. If you are looking for a magician to perform at an event, you must get this guy. I love Joe! (I never thought I’d say that about a magician, but seriously everybody was so impressed by him.) Not only is a great magician but he is also a great performer and entertainer. He had us laughing the whole time.

Unfortunately, the other shows we watched didn’t compare to Joe. The ones we saw used a lot more “props” than illusions so it didn’t seem as impressive to us. They were still good though. Also, every week there are a different set of magicians performing so who knows what/who you will see.

Luckily, that night they held a raffle and one of our friends got a 1 month membership and he can invite up to 8 guests so we will probably go again. If you are really desperate, you can try going to a magic shop and befriending a magician like this article suggests.

PS. Also wanted to mention Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! I made corned beef and cabbage using this recipe from Slashfood. The meat was so much more tender than the one I made last year! Thumbs up for this recipe. (Just make sure you don’t mind Guinness since you can definitely taste it in the meat).

Also, I finally got around to making No Knead Bread. It came out pretty good! I can’t wait to put in whole garlic cloves in my next bread. At first I was intimidated to try it but it really is that easy! Love it.

Congrats on going to the castle! If you get a chance, you should go when Dan Cole is doing a show there. He’s good! I like the close-up galleries there because the magicians doing those are REALLY good and it does feel like magic because you’re so close to them but you still can’t “see” the trick.

Oh my GAWWWWWD I love corn beef and cabbage. My mother made some yesterday and also put potatoes and carrots in it. UHHHHH-mazing. I am jealous that you live in a place like L.A. that has fun stuff like the magic shows. I am stuck in boring ol’ Nebraska…ugh…

Louise – We missed out on the sleight of hand show cuz it kept getting full before we could get in so that sucked. we want to see it next time tho!

Andy – I was born and raised in Oklahoma and there’s a lot of times I wish I still lived there! There are pluses and minuses everywhere :) You should come visit LA sometime though!
