20 Food Myths

This is a great article dispelling 20 popular food myths. Ones I didn’t know:

#2: Boiling drains away all nutrients from vegetables – It’s true that you lose some minerals but not all!

#13 You can’t deep fry in olive oil – I always avoided this because of the whole lower smoking point argument (which is true) but it turns out it is possible and is supposed to taste better! I love olive oil so I’ll have to try this next time.

#18 Salads and sandwiches containing mayonnaise aren’t safe for picnics – I’ve always been afraid of having anything with mayo out for awhile and eating it. Yes, I’m paranoid about getting food poisoning hehe

Shortcuts.com: Coupons Without The Clipping

If you’re like me, you’re too lazy to clip coupons when you go grocery shopping. This website, Shortcuts.com, eliminates that! Too bad it only works for a few stores…hopefully they add more in the future. In my area, the only one that worked for me was Ralphs but your area might have more.

So how does the website work? You just sign up with whatever club card you have and then it will display all of the coupons available for that store. Next, just click “add” on whichever coupons you think you’ll use. Next time you go grocery shopping, the coupons will be automatically applied to your purchases! Pretty easy!

Halloween Potluck Recipes

Boyrobot and I are going to a halloween potluck this year and I’ve been trying to find recipes that are fitting for the holiday. I think I’ll be making these cheddar cobwebs because it sounds yummy and more importantly….easy! hehe.

and I’m contemplating having boyrobot bring this Pumpkin Cocktail

Or this spiderweb cheesecake (cheater recipe)

Halloween food is so fun! I can’t wait to see what everyone else brings.

Brain Dump Monday: New Wedding Date!

After a week of headaches and frustration, we decided to change our wedding date! It’s now 08/08/09. And the change was all so we could have the ceremony here:

Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

Hopefully it’s worth it. We had to change our reception to a questionable restaurant. It’s new so I haven’t read any wedding reception reviews about the place which makes me a little nervous. Is the food going to be ok? And the service? Blah….I’m a worrywart. Hopefully everything will be ok!

How To Get Rid Of Viruses

3 days later and I’m FINALLY rid of my virus. I was on the brink of reformatting my computer, throwing it against a wall, or finally breaking down and buying an apple. ARGH. This was the nastiest thing I’ve ever had on my computer. I would get rid of it only to have it come back. And each time it rendered my computer useless. My whole desktop including start bar would blink and in about 5 minutes everything would disappear. Every once in awhile I would get a blue screen. Other times I would get a popup telling me to buy Antivirus 2009. Yeah….I didn’t do that. It turned out I had some variant of the Vundo virus. And after dling about 10 different antiviruses and trying 10 million different things including messing with my registry, this single webpage saved the day: That Computer Guy’s Help Forum (seriously, you should be bookmarking this page right now!!)

I think my initial problem was I kept googling my exact symptoms but it turns out that Vundo evolves and is always changing. So a fix that worked in the past, might not work now. At least that’s what I was running into. But I followed the steps outlined in that forum and it worked! My computer, I believe, is cleancleanclean. YAY. I’m sooooooooo happy!

So I’ll commence my regular posting tomorrow…sorry for the delay. I was literally spending every free moment I had on this (which isn’t very much to begin with). I’ll be back just in time for Friday Links!

My Laptop Is Hosed

No time to post today because my laptop got overtook by a nasty virus. The kind where the screen is blinking and I can’t open anything including my antivirus. Sad. :(

Monday Brain Dump: Weekend Recap

Friday: scored last minute tickets to see one of my favorite bands Jack’s Mannequin play a secret show at the Viper Room. At first I was kind of iffy about the new album but it’s totally grown on me. Seeing them live always reinforces my love for the band as well. Andrew totally rocks out on the stage live and puts so much feeling into his music. He also did a cover of MGMT’s Kids…which I didn’t recognize at the time because it sounded so different with his voice! Cool though!

Saturday: Saw my parents who are in town and visited my grandfather in the nursing home for the first time. :( It was really depressing. He has early stages of Alzheimer’s so they couldn’t take care of him at home anymore. Another reminder of how much I don’t want to grow old!!!! After that, headed back to W. LA. We ate at Souplantation (blueberry muffins!!!!) for dinner and saw someone famous! Sam Jones III. You don’t think you know him but YOU DO:

It’s Pete from Smallville!!!

Then we rented Rocket Science where I developed a tiny crush on Nicholas D’Agosto. I forgot that he was on Heroes. I remember when he was on that show I thought he looked NOT cute and actually kind of weird but in this movie he was really, really cute. Anyways, I think most people will think the movie was boring and not that great but I thought it was amusing/entertaining. If you liked Rushmore or other quirky movies, you might like it too.

Sunday: Spent the whole day with my parents. My dad changed my oil (dad=best car mechanic in the world!). Celebrated my little cousin Jadon’s birthday. He turned 5. He’s sooo adorable! Love my family. The night ended with some yummy shaved ice from Boba Time. If you love shaved ice you have to try the one here. They add coffee to it and TONS of fresh fruit. It’s the best! (Just a small disclaimer that out of the 50 times I have been here one time I went the boba was very soggy and gross. Normally it’s the perfect consistency though!)
